New York University Shanghai

An NYU degree in China — the first Sino-US joint-venture research university

New York University Shanghai was established in 2012 by New York University and East China Normal University as the first Sino-US joint-venture research university approved by China’s Ministry of Education. It is a degree-granting campus of NYU rather than a partner or exchange arrangement: every graduate receives a New York University degree, and undergraduates are guaranteed study away at NYU New York, NYU Abu Dhabi or the university’s global academic centres. Instruction is entirely in English under a liberal arts and sciences curriculum, with 19 undergraduate majors spanning business and finance, computer science and data science, engineering, neural science, interactive media arts, humanities and the social sciences, plus graduate programs including the MS in Data Analytics and Business Computing and PhD tracks in data science and electrical engineering run jointly with NYU schools in New York. Since spring 2023 the university has occupied a purpose-built vertical campus at Qiantan (New Bund) in Pudong. The student body of roughly 2,500 is deliberately balanced between Chinese and international students from around 80 countries, and Chinese language study is required of all international undergraduates — producing graduates who hold a US degree, speak Mandarin and understand China first-hand.
