Founded in 1952 as the Beijing Institute of Iron and Steel Technology from the mining and metallurgy departments of six leading Chinese universities, USTB was the country’s first higher-education institution devoted to iron, steel and metals, and it built the technical foundations of the industry that now produces more than half the world’s steel. It is a 211 and Double First Class university, with Metallurgy, Materials Science and Engineering, Mining Engineering and History of Science and Technology named as its Double First Class disciplines, and it operates a single unified campus on Xueyuan Road in Haidian District beside Zhongguancun. For international students targeting materials science, metallurgy, environmental engineering, mining, mechanical engineering or low-carbon industrial technology, USTB offers English-taught degrees inside the State Key Laboratory for Advanced Metals and Materials and the State Key Laboratory of Green and Low-Carbon Iron and Steel Metallurgy, at tuition among the lowest of any Double First Class engineering university in Beijing, and it hosts more than 1,000 international students.

Admission Requirements
What you need to apply to University of Science and Technology Beijing as an international student.
- Academic RequirementsHigh school diploma with strong mathematics, physics and chemistry results for bachelor’s; a relevant bachelor’s or master’s degree for graduate programs.
- Language RequirementsEnglish-taught: IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL 70, or prior education in English. Chinese-taught: HSK Level 4 or above, with Level 5 required for most engineering majors.
- Entrance AssessmentAll undergraduate applicants must sit the China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA) and submit the transcript with their application.
- Required DocumentsPassport, transcripts, graduation certificate, study plan, language certificate, recommendation letters and a non-criminal record certificate.
- Application DeadlineApplications run from November 1 to June 15. Scholarship applicants: April 30.
- Application FeeCNY 600, non-refundable, paid through the USTB online application system.
