Founded in 1953 as the Beijing Petroleum Institute — China’s first higher-education institution dedicated to the petroleum industry — China University of Petroleum, Beijing (CUPB) is a national key university directly affiliated with the Ministry of Education. A 211 Project and Double First Class university, it holds national Double First Class status in both Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering and Geological Resources and Geological Engineering, and ranks 3rd in the world for Engineering — Petroleum in the QS World University Rankings by Subject. CUPB operates its main campus in Changping District at the foot of the Yanshan mountains in northern Beijing, together with the Karamay campus in Xinjiang opened in 2015, giving students access both to the capital’s research ecosystem and to China’s largest onshore oilfields. The university hosts more than 700 international students and offers English-taught bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in petroleum engineering, oil and gas storage and transportation, geology, chemical engineering and energy management — backed by two state key laboratories and long-standing partnerships with CNPC, Sinopec and CNOOC that make it the natural choice for students building careers in global energy.

Admission Requirements

What you need to apply to China University of Petroleum, Beijing as an international student.

  • Academic RequirementsHigh school diploma with strong mathematics, physics and chemistry results for bachelor’s; a relevant bachelor’s or master’s degree for graduate programs.
  • Language RequirementsEnglish-taught: IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 80, or prior education in English. Chinese-taught: HSK Level 4 or above, with HSK 5 preferred for engineering majors.
  • Entrance AssessmentUndergraduate applicants must sit the China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA) in their program language and submit the transcript.
